Hi there,
I had a SmartLink Modem in my PC and could connect to Internet fine.
One day when I came back from vacation, I found that it would no
longer connect to the Internet. the speaker would sound but instead
of dialtone I got other funny noises.
My Telephone line provider said they checked my line and that it was
probably the modem. So I bought a new Intel modem.
Before installing the new one, I went to Add remove programs and
clicked Uninstall on the Smartlink drivers. An error occurred
uninstalling, but the item disappeared from the Add/Remove list. I
went into device manager to check whether the modem was still there,
but it had disappeared.
Thinking that the uninstall had not worked properly I reinstalled the
old Smartlink device when it was detected. But when I then went to
Modem Devices, and also the V.92 settings in control panel, it kept
bringing up a messagebox saying "modem not setup properly, go to
add/remove programs and uninstall and reinstall the modem" (or words
to that effect) I uninstalled it again and the same thing happened
again.
I then tried the Intel modem. I can go into "Phone and Modem Setting"
and query the modem fine from there. I stll cannot get into the
"Modem Settings" and "V.92 Settings" in Control Panel, because i kepp
getting that message.
i still cannot connect to the Internet or call out anywhere from ym
line. I then tried it at my friends house and it worked there.
Called the Phone people again, but they aren't prepared to listen
because I can't go into "Modem Settings" to try their tests.
Is there any way of finding out why I can't get into "Modem Settings",
or some way of getting rid of every remnant of the Smartlink modem, so
that "Modem settings" recognises that I have installed a new modem?
If I can get this soreted out, then hopefully I can go back to the
phone people and convince them that the fault is in their line,
because it works at my friends house with his line.
