The setup works just fine except for one thing: It will not boot off hard
drive. It will boot OK off the CD and install the initial Windows files, but
on first boot it won't I have inspected the drives I have tried (3 so far)
in another machine and the MBR seems to have been corrupted in all cases.

I have tried resetting the BIOS, FIXMBR to fix the MBR, but each time the
MBR gets re-corrupted. I have two identical mainboards and processor and
graphics card setups and they both do the same thing with 3 different
drives, IBM, WD, and Wuantum, various sizes.

All D bracket light patterns produced OK.

Any ideas anyone?

Did you install the hard drive controller drivers during the installation?
What OS are you installing?
Do you get a "STOP" error? (Assuming windows)
Do you have a dual-boot setup?
Do you get any sort of error message?
At what stage during boot does it appear to die?
Have you tried a different cable between controller <-> drive?
Have you run any diagnostics against the drives in another system?

Cheers,

James

Sounds like a windows problem to me. Where did widows come from and what
version.

Okay, there has been some progress.

If I have the board out of the case, I can get it to work.

I know the obvious problem would be shorting, but I have a new raidmax
case with a mb tray, and it still works screwed to the tray. I have
only the bare necessities installed, and I can get XP to load. So I
unplug everything, put it in the case, and when I plug the power in,
the CPU fan and Video card fan come on immediately, but no video
output. Also, the power pins and reset pins don't work.

I can get it working again by pulling the tray out and laying it on my
table. However, it still does the same fan on no video business until
I pull a stick of mem out, then put it back in. Then it boots like a
champ.

I'm wondering if:

A. there is something loose so when I put it horizontal it shorts
B. if the mem slots are loose
c. if the tray is grounding in the case.

I have looked for evidence of all of these problems, but I can't see
it.

I solved it using this solution, if anyone needs it (turns out to be the
BIOS not properly recognising the hard drive):

Very naughty of MSI and their BIOS supplier.
