Modem stop working: No dial tone

I'm using a HP Pavilion zv5330us laptop ( WinXP Home ). It could
connect to internet using DUN without any problem until last weekend. I
keep getting "No dial tone". I'm sure the phone jack and the cable are
OK since my PC desktop has no problem to connect using the same wall
jack and cable.

I turned on the speaker of modem. When I try to make the connection, I
hear the modem dial the number and afterward the sound of busy signal.
Then the "No dial tone" message appears. Any idea how to fix this
problem? How do I know if it's a defective modem or something else?

Hi

As the prior guy mention to do the following and if all else fails
try removing the modem and download the latest drivers for it and
if that still fails, I would have your modem replaced, could be that
your modem is intermiting, so contact HP, hopefully it's still inder
warranty

You say it's dialing and you can then hear a busy signal? Sounds like it's
working and dialing into a busy line. I don't know what to make of the "no
dial tone" message *after* receiving the busy signal.

Check the number it's dialing.

It works after I changed my modem from COM4 to COM7. I also disabled
"Wait for dial tone before dialing".
