usb external hard drive and digital camera....

I am sorry to bring this up again...
I have Windows XP SP2 .

When inserting a USB cable into any of the three USB ports, both for a
digital camera and for an external hard drive, after the beeping that
signals the occupation of the port, the devices are not recognized:

-the software of the camera is not triggered, nothing happens
-the external hard drive icon does not appear in My Computer and the
driver is not usable.
With XP on another computer, the digital camera is automatically recognised,
and you can start dowloading the pictures without the need of any software
related to the digital camera...

I have this error message that might explain part of the problem when I
turned on my compuyter:
"retrieval of THotkey failed...error code : 0x...."
this seems to be something on the Registry ???

And note - it's no good putting your unmunged email address in a newsgroup
post unless you really really want viruses and spam. People should respond
to the group anyway, not the individual - that way everyone gets to share in
the fun.

Hi, Thank you for your answer..but I did remove all the USB entries...and
when I turned on the computer, the "Found New Hardware Wizard" came up, and I
got the following message: hardware not installed because the wizard can not
find the necessary software"....I do not have a CD with a software to install
the USB entries...So now none of the USB ports work...I had a printer that
worked well before that operation...
Please help me !!!

The issue does not seem to be due to THotkey, which is a Toshiba touchpad
utility. As regards to the usb drive not been assigned a drive letter even
after being detected by Windows, check all of these places for any hints.

1. Double-click the "Safely Remove hardware icon" on the system tray and
check whether the device is really detected.
2. Go to Device Manager(Start>Settings>Control panel>system>Hardware) and
check that the usb hard drive/camera is listed.
3. In Computer Management, try assigning drive letters to the usb hard
drive/camera if they are listed.

Let us know the results.
