I have a problem with USB. Device manager reports:

"The drivers for this device are not installed. (Code 28)
To reinstall the drivers for this device, click Reinstall Driver."

No amount of re-installing makes any difference, auto re-install, manual
re-install all result in the same problem. If I delete the devices and
do a rescan, XP recognises the USB devices but the driver install always
ends in the same error.

The USB used to work fine but now it doesn't. I installed XP on a spare
hard disk and the install went fine. USB recognised, installed and works
properly. I don't want to do a complete re-install on my main hard disk
because I have a heavily customised setup.

I feel that I need to delete some registry entries and files to get USB
to re-install correctly.

This is racking my brain. Any help will be much appreciated.

What USB device are you trying to connect?

Are the USB ports on the motherboard or on a PCI card?

Are the ports KNOWN to be working correctly with ANY devices?

Cari

My message was not clear. It is the USB ports that are not working.
They are on the motherboard and are VIA Rev 5 or later USB Universal
Host Controller.

As I said, if I install XP on a spare hard disk, the USB port drivers
install correctly and work fine.
