Trying to install this scanner. The computer doesn't recognize it when
plugged in, so I tried going through Add Hardware -- Cameras and Scanners.
The second screen gives a list of possible manufacturers, none of which is
accurate. How do I install something that isn't on that list?
It's fairly old (pre - XP) but I have updated software (PaperPort 9 from
ScanSoft); I just can't get the computer to see it!

Go to Visioneer's website and get the latest Windows XP drivers.
The software is not enough.
If drivers are not available, it may be time to buy another scanner.

You need updated drivers for the SCANNER. If the computer does not
communicate with it properly it doesn't matter what software you are using.
You won't see it.

Hi Ephy -
You need drivers and, unfortunately, Windows XP doesn't have a driver for
your scanner.
If you visit the Visioneer support page for your model ...
.... you'll see that your scanner only supports Windows 2000, ME and 98. The
product is referred to as "end of life" .. which generally means that no
further development will be done and the only support will be for the
originally supported operating systems.
You may be able to install the Windows 2000 driver in order to use the
scanner, but there are no guarantees that you'll be successful.
The PaperPort software from ScanSoft does not provide device driver
functionality. You're at the mercy of Visioneer and, unfortunately, you're
likely at a dead end if the Windows 2000 driver won't install.
