AK35GTR and mouse problems

I've had this MB since 4/15/2002, and it has been working fine. Recently the
PS2 mouse has started acting up intermittently. It will sometimes not work
for a short time, it is an Intellimouse optical 1.1. I have tried a
different mouse with the same problem. I have also tried the mouse in the
USB port with the same problem. I have removed the MB and inspected the
connections and solder joints around the PS2 connector and did not find any
problems. I have tried to call Shuttle tech support but was on hole too
long. My question is what is Shuttles warranty? If not under warranty is
worth sending back to Shuttle or just get a new MB. Any thoughts on the
cause of the problem.

Thanks
Tony

Hi Tony

I just bought a used AK35-GTRaid a few weeks ago for $20 and love it
so far.

Was wondering, does the mouse just stop responding while you are using
it? or does it not work when you reboot or cold boot?

Also will a cold boot ever fix the problem?

What I am thinking is that it could be one of a few things. You could
have motherboard hardware going bad or it could be related to the way
resources are being assigned to either the USB or PS/2 ports.

Do you have lot's of add-in cards that share interupts? Check to BIOS
settings to see by chance it resources are assigned automatically or
manually. Also, if you use windows check the device manager to see if
there are any conflicts with with IRQ12 or the USB ports.

I don't know if this is your main system but I would try to narrow it
down but doing a clean install of your choice O/S with the board using
just a Vid card and single drive.

I don't know what PCB version you have of the board, but I think I
have like ver 1.2 and I use BIOS version AK35s00m with good results.
This is the latest I could find on the www.spacewalker.com web site
for my PCB revision. You will have to go into their Archives to find
what you are looking for I think.

If you are manually allocating resources, you may try letting the BIOS
assign them. If all else fails, flash the BIOS to the latest version
and then load system defaults after rebooting from the BIOS menu.

I believe once you have narrowed it down that no other hardware could
be conflicting you should look at possibly having a bad board. I have
not dealt with shuttle directly, so I don't know how their tech
support is or what terms they can RMA your board under.

I hope this helps

Hi MHz,
This is my son's system. The problems are intermittent in nature. That is
that the light on the mouse will go out for a second or two, and the mouse
will not respond. It does not require a reboot to get the mouse back, it
comes back by itself. Other than the video card, we have a D-Link NIC card
and an Adaptec DuoConnect IEEE/USB2.0 card installed. The D-Link has been
since we built the system in 2002, the Adaptec card has been installed since
12/2003. I will look at the bios first, not sure what version is in there.

I will get back with a follow-up.

Thanks
Tony
