Can both an PATA & SATA drive be in the same machine?

Does this depend upon your motherboard?

Is the connector for both drives the same & if no can a SATA be made to
perform like a SATA by say adding a adapter plug?

Thanks in advance

yes, you can have both, SATA uses a very different cable and
plug.
If the mobo does not have SATA controller/ports you can add
a PCI card.

To get full performance you need a mobo with SATA built-in.

Can both an PATA & SATA drive be in the same machine? - YES, without any
problems. One needs to be wary of configuration issues, which is generally
determined by on-board or plug-in SATA controller.

Does this depend upon your motherboard? NO, a Mobo without SATA can still
have SATA driveswhen they are attached to a PCI plug-in SATA controller.

Is the connector for both drives the same? NO: very different

if no can a SATA be made to perform like a SATA by say adding a adapter
plug. - Not sure that you meat to write it this way. However one doesn't
plug a SATA drive into an ATA controller by way of an adapter - wrong
interface, wrong signals, wrong solution. Why buy a SATA device, if one
wants to get ATA performance, just a waste of money.
