I have read so many articles in this community about port forwarding, but no one have explianed in detial how to "forward a port". Can anyone teach me how to forward a port?

and which port i need to forward in icq, yahoo messenger, and MSN messenger?

Im using a Linsys 8-port router and a netgear fast ethernet 4-port hub. With a Cable Modem(UK-NTL Cable connection) (hub can be take away if it affect port forwarding). Thank

<A HREF="http://www.iss.net/security_center/advice/Exploits/Ports/" target="_new">Link</A> ...for the port database.

<A HREF="http://www.practicallynetworked.com/sharing/app_port_list.htm" target="_new">nother Link</A>...more port info (better for applying etc).

To forward a port you need to know which port(s) the app uses. <A HREF="http://www.practicallynetworked.com/sharing/app_ports.htm" target="_new">Bonus Link</A>...for extra info.

Lets say you want to setup an FTP server. You will need to set port 21 to allow inbound (IN) connections using the TCP protocol. (Sometimes port 20 too...)

Here's a cutting from "nother link" above:

"MSN Messenger
(Watch Out! Opens a wide port range!)
NOTE: Shut off any personal firewall programs such as BlackIce, ZoneAlarm, etc.
Ports 6891-6900 enable File send,
Port 6901 is for voice communications
Allows Voice, PC to Phone, Messages, and Full File transfer capabilities.
Thnx to Brad King & Bill Finch Jr.
IN TCP 6891 - 6900
IN TCP 1863
IN UDP 1863
IN UDP 5190
IN UDP 6901
IN TCP 6901"

As you can see, a fair old range of ports are messed with here to allow the various possible services used with MSN. A lot of folk using routers with NAT enabled find they can chat fine, but can't use the file transfer aspect. This above setup is how they get round the problem.

Hope this lot helps a bit.

The info is in front of you, and I dare say you have a manual for your kit.
