Hi,

I recently experienced a strange problem and wonder if anyone else has a
similar experience and know why would this happen?

I have a Dell Inspiron 8000 that has been working fine for years and now is
used by my wife for sending and receiving mails at home. A few months ago,
we noticed the keyboard had some problems and a few keys wouldn’t work (e.g.
z, x, won’t function at all at log-in screen and sometime for Enter key).
But the problem soon be solved by using an external keyboard.

A few weeks ago, we started to hear some strange noise from the hard disk.
And after a few days, we determined the hard disk is about to die soon. So
we eventually bought a new hard disk and performed a clean installation and
everything went well.

But during the new clean installation of Windows XP, I noticed the keyboard
worked just fine even without the external keyboard. And since the new hard
disk is in place, no problem for the keyboard whatsoever.

Interesting thing is when I put back the old hard disk, keyboard problem
comes back as well although now it’s different keys that have problem (e.g.
press “P” turned out to be “-“ and so on). Put back the new drive, problems
are gone and the keyboard works fine.

Since I have never heard about or experienced anything like this, I am
curious if anyone has similar experience or know why would this happen?

Thanks in advance.

Take a look under Device Manager and see what keyboard device you are
supporting when you use one hard drive, and then check again when using
the other hard drive. Is it also possible that you are using different
drivers, so check what maker and version of mouse driver is listed for
the mouse when you have each drive inserted.

You could also boot into Safe mode with the problematic drive to see if
it is a software problem with one of the startup programs.
