HP C1823D...is it the age of the ink?

Does anyone know the expected life of HP inkjet inks?

I have a Deskjet 720c that is, of course, several years old.

The last color cartridge (C1823D) that I installed (in March 2002) was
expired (April 2001) by the time of installation but it worked fine.
I can't remember when the quality started to change.

I haven't been printing much lately, because the black ran out and I
couldn't afford to replace it until now. Any time I printed text, I
changed the color to blue; it worked fine.

I decided to change the color cartridge when I changed the black. I
only had the second expired cartridge so I installed it. The yellow
ink is not printing. I cleaned the print heads twice (including the
"prime" feature) but still no yellow (and therefore, no green).

I re-installed the old cartridge, but it too does not print yellow.
Is it likely that the age of the ink caused the failure?

Yes, the cartridges are now more than five years old and beyond their shelf
life. You might be able to recover the cartridge by gently forcing air into
the yellow vent on the back end of the cartridge, but for best results replace
the cartridge with a fresh one. I would look for a cartridge with at least six
months remaining before the "install by" date.

It sounds like the printhead got clogged since it's so old. I've never used
expired color cartridges in my 930c, but I do use expired black cartridges.
