Serial Ports not working properly

Hi,
I have a compaq evo w6000 workstation with 2 serial ports. I'm trying to
communicate with some Cisco gear but am not having any luck. It appears
that the ports can receive data but cannot transmit data. In other words,
I'm able to see the connected equipment when I turn it on and it's booting
up but cannot send any keystrokes...I've used about 10 different terminal
apps with no luck. I used the Compaq diags to test the serial ports and the
diags came back clean. I uninstalled and reinstalled the ports several
times in safe mode and in normal mode but still same old thing. Any help is
appreciated.

Thanks,
Jody Cohen

Check with the Cisco kit as to what port settings are required.

It may be that you are attempting to communicate at 115200 Bps whereas the
Ciso kit wants 9600 Bps.

You could get or make a null modem cable and connect the two
serial ports together, then start a terminal program on each port
and see if you can type back and fourth between the two ports lto
verify they are working. check in the bios to ensure they are
enabled there. You could also connect a multimeter to the tx pin
on the serial port and echo some characters and see if the meter
reacts. Radio Shack and other computer places have serial port
testers to connect to the port to verify activity.
