When I try to write new files to my CD, the wizard tells me the disk (new
and unused) cannot be written to. Have been doing it successfully in the
past. Is there a setting somewhere on my XP system that can cure this?

Check the properties of the drive to ensure it is enabled to write to a
disk. This can sometimes get discombobulated for no apparent reason at all.

XP does not support DVD burning. You need 3rd party software to accomplish
this.
