Hi All!

The Multi-card reader that I received with the Mobo, has two connectors, one
with about 6 pins, and one four pin connector. To what on the MoBo, do I
connect the four pin connector?

Anyone?

Pablo, do you know what the connectors are, the only thing that I can
see is that it's USB. I have the BayOne reader with the Platinum board
and that's all that's on there that resembles what you describe.
I'd have to open the case up and have a look to be sure.

Hi Ray, thanks for responding.

The box I am refering to is the optional "Sigma" (The manual uses the latin
symbol) Box that is included with this Mobo. The outside front of the box
has four slots for memory cards and one slot for a USB connection. One of
the connections inside the box, is a four pinout connection, a cable is
given to connect it to the motherboard, but I don't know which connection I
should make to the Mobo.

I have a son-in-law who will come to check the setup next weekend, so I
should be in the know after his visit (he is quite a wizard at all this as
he's put together quite a few systems, and recommended this Mobo...).

Hi Pablo, I looked at my system because I have the same setup I believe.
What you are describing is the USB cable (I have three from the reader)
two are a silver braided covered in plastic cable, terminating in a
green, four wire plug (actually there are five connectors, but one is
unused). These two are from the USB ports on the front of the reader.

There is another USB cable from the memory cards themselves. A gray
plastic covering.

They plug into the motherboard at the bottom, there are two green
sockets side by side, with two row of pins in each socket (making four
USB ports).
You should be able to plug into any of these rows, just watch the
orientation of the plug/s.

The red sockets down there are firewire, I don't know if your Sigma has
ports for this.

Do you have manuals for these products? If not, you can get the info at
the Soyo website.

Good luck........Ray........

Aha!!!

Yes! that is exactly the description of this Sigma (Greek Symbol on the
manual) case. I connected the firewire to the first red connector at the
bottom of the case. OK. The second wire (yep, it has a silvery sheathing
ending on green header with four female connectors) is the connection yet to
be made from the Sigma case. I am also assuming that it is for a USB
connection.

(Hummmm.... could it be a power connection, and not for a USB? Hummm.) But
back to the USB search.

Are the two green motherboard headers the only USB headers on the board? The
manual reads about the Universal Serial Bus like: "USB1/USB2, USB3/USB4,
USB20_1/USB20_2". It also says that "this Motherboard provides 8 USB2.0
ports for your additional devices."... and to "Plug the USB device jack into
the available USB connector USB1, USB2, USB3, and USB4.".

Tha back panel of the motherboard shows four USB connectors into which I can
plug four separate devices. OK, so that's four of the eight. Then on the
inside I can only see those two separate green pinouts into which I
connected the Sonata case two front USB ports to connect two USB devices.
OK, so that's six of the eight. Where might I be able to find the other two?
I am hoping to find at least one of the two left USB connections. One that
has a four pinout connection for a USB on the motheboard, so I can connect
the female end of the silvery wiere and activate the Sigma's case USB
capabilities... but I can't decipher their location on the Mobo.

The good news (unrelated) is that I put in the memory, a floppy disk drive,
a couple of temporary peripherals (a video card, a mouse, a CRT) and booted
the system to check if the processor, mobo, and PSU worked properly, and if
you could only see my smile as I heard that single beep and saw the posting
on the screen... perfect!

Oh, the tribulations of those in search of knowledge! ;)

Thanks again Ray for all the help you are giving me. Believe it. It's like
having a friend with whom to converse about this problem. The ultimate
non-resolution, of course is to not have some functionality to the Sigma
box, but that would be terrible if what I believe the function of the four
pin connection is for, true, I would loose the card readers... ;( (I just
noticed that the Antec site also calls it a BayOne DV. Actually the
description says: Break out box BayONE DV 9-in-1 Flash Media Reader/Writer
with 1394 IEEE Firewire. In another section it is described as a Sigma Box
featuring 9-in-1 USB 2.0 flash memory reader/writer, 1 front IEEE 1394,
SPDIF audio connector

Hope you are still around... :|

Hi Ray:

One more thought.
The Sonata case connectors to the USB pinouts have a small casing holding 9
female connections. The pinouts on the motherboard have two rows, one of 5
and one of 4 pins that fit the female connector. If I disconnect one of the
Sonata's connections to one of the USB pinouts, I would be able to connect
the four female connection to the row of four pinouts on the motherboard.
Would that be another solution?

Much obliged.

It's good to see that you're making progress. It's great when they start
up first time isn't it?

I'll try and clarify a few points for you, incidentally, I have the
Sonata case also, this is too spooky.

Here's a photo of my setup regarding the USB/Firewire. Note that there
are two ports per green USB housing.

http://home.cogeco.ca/~ray_rogers/DSCN3929.jpg

As you can see I had to make a choice as to what to hook up because
there are only four USB ports on the motherboard and I have two front
ports on the Sonata case, two on the front of the "Sigma" box and one
port needed for the reader itself.
So what I did was to leave one of the connectors from the box off to
give me two operable ones on the Sonata case and one on the Sigma. Plus
the reader of course.

From the photo, the left firewire is from the Sonata case front.
The right Firewire is from the Sigma box.
Left USB = two ports on the Sonata
Right USB = one Sigma box port and the card reader.

I'm here for a while I hope.

Hummm. Ray, thank you for posting that picture. I'll capture it and show it,
and the series of emails, to my son-in-law this weekend and see if he can
sort everything out. In the meantime I'll get the rest of the stuff and
complete the buildup.

I have two USB connections in the front of the case. But I also have two USB
cables with each cable having a female housing that accomodate nine (9)
pinouts from the USB pinout housing on the motherboard. This does not leave
space to make the connection from the Sigma Box which has a cable that has a
different configuration than those that come from the Sonata case.

What I am calling the USB cable from the Sigma Box -the silvery one (which
is the only other cable comming out of the Box - the first one being the
Firewire) only has a casing of only one row that accomodates only four (4)
pinout connections that would come out of the Sonata case -in fact the there
is a fifth place on the cable, but it is not open for a pin. This leads me
to think that in this Sigma Box, the card reader may be based on a Firewire
rather than on USB power... Is this possible?. (in fact there is no real USB
connection for a USB device on the Sigma Box. The only connections available
on the Sigma Box are the openings for the several memory cards, etc., and
the opening for a firewire device.). This interpretation would still not
tell me where I should connect the wire that allows for the 4 pinout
connection.

In your picture, there are clearly two separate cords connecting to each of
the two headers of the USB casing on the motherboard. From looking at the
picture it seems that the case I have appears that you were able to
separately use the right USB casing to connect two different USB wires
whereas I cannot do this with mine.

Confusing? You bet. I hope that when the cavalry comes this weekend, I will
be able to resolve this part of the puzzle. I'll keep you posted.

Thanks again for your posts, they are much appreciated!

Pablo
