Hello,

I would like to add a SONY StorStation to a Windows XP pro PC. The drive is
several years old and the software that came with it is for Windows 9X. It
connects using the printer port. Windows doesn't see this tape drive. Is
there something I need to do to get Windows to know it's there or is it a
compatibility issue?

Thanks for any thoughts you might have.

It is a hardware compatibility issue. It would be cheaper
and better to get an external USB hard drive. Tape drives
are not random access so your back/file search functions are
limited. The tape is probably much smaller than a
reasonably priced hard drive.

You can look at the SONY site for XP drivers, but I don't
think you can find them, XP restrict direct hardware access.

You need XP drivers for the tape drive, have you checked the Sony website?
With the price of hard drives under $.50 per gb I can't imagine why you
would want to use a tape drive.

XP does not like to have parallel devices, other than printers, on parallel
ports. XP , as with 2000 and NT, does not allow direect access to the
parallel port hardware. However, there is a special utility that gives you
direct access to the parallel port. I do not remember the name.

Look at Stomp Backup MyPC for XP compatible tape backup software.

Didn't see any drivers at SONY.

I have the drive and I have the tapes so I thought I might just as well try
to use them. Isn't costing me anything. I figured if I could get to work,
fine. If not I'm not out anything.

It's the challenge of it all...

I know what you mean. I also like doing things for 'the challenge'. And it's
not costing you anything. On the other hand, the advantages of optical media
are so overwhelming, that it really doesn't pay to fiddle with tapes.
Especially when CD and DVD recorders are so inexpensive. I would find a
computer that will transfer the data from tape to optical media and go from
there.

You could take the tape drive apart to see what makes it go. I like doing
that too. Around my house, anything that stops working is a candidate for
autopsy.

Windows XP (and 2000) does not support parallel or floppy based tape
drives.

tapes are dinosaurs of the past - get a DVD burner and do your backups on
+RW!
It's cheap and one DVD holds 4.7gig data. How many tapes do u need for that?
Best of all it's fast, much faster than any tape device..

Dual layer DVD +- RW drives are under $100 and media is
about a dollar for single layer, higher for dual layer.
Also it is random access, so they are more useable than
tapes.

A USB/Firewire hard drive is also a good back-up choice.

But if you just want to experiment, look for NT drivers,
they may or may not work.

But how many optical drives are still usable after 10 years? I am still
using an 8mm tape drive to back up our computer. The tapes will hold
about 10 GB per tape compressed. I still have tapes that are 10 years
old that can still be read. I can't say the same for any high density
optical media I have tried. And the price for the tape is less than
that of a dual-layer DVD which can only be written to once.

That's funny, spoken just like a home user. Just how would you expect
anyone to backup a 250GB partitions in an automated manner?

It would take a full day to backup a 250GB partition to DVD, and it
would require someone to feed it DVD's in the process.

Tape has it's place, where you need to do large backups, where you want
to automate something larger than a single DVD, where you want to backup
your office/network, etc... Oh, and a DVD doesn't burn much faster than
a good tape drive can put data on tape.

I have LTO tapes that hold 400GB compressed. I also have older DDS 2,3,4
drives that have been working for more than 5 years, have lots of cheap
tapes, and agree that tape is the long term method to use. I even have
and old Iomeag Tape drive that provided 10gb of storage space from when
I was a beta tester for their tape division.
