Hi,
I'm using a cable modem on a Win XP machine to connect to the internet. I
would like to set up a Win 98SE machine in another room using some kind of
wireless connection thru my cable modem. Can this be done? If so, what do I
need?
Thanks,
jll

It's so much easier to suggest solutions when you don't know too much about
the problem

Like Peterk said you need a wireless router and wireless pci card to install
in the PC. If your in the states Best Buy's Sunday ad listed a Belkin
wireless router for $9.99 after rebates, same one I bought in March from
CompUSA to use with my Compaq notebook. It worked like a charm. I would
suggest getting a matching wireless card, by that I mean from the same
manufacturer although they are supposed to all work together. My Compaq
notebook works at my home with my Belkin and at my neighbors, he has a Dlink
wireless router.

Thanks for the quick response. The router would connect to the cable modem
and the wireless pci card would be installed in the machine in the other
room, right? Do they make a router that could be wired to my PC and still be
wireless for the other?
Thanks,

Almost all wireless routers come with 4 external ports that you would
connect an Ethernet cable to. The Belkin I mentioned does.

The Netgear website has detailed drawings on just such a setup.
I use a Netgear connected by wire to one computer, connected by wire to
another computer and wirelessly with my laptop.
Any computer on the system can access any other computer on the system as
well as connect independantly to the net.
This website has instructions for setting up a home network....either wired
or wireless or both
http://www.homenethelp.com/ I found the Netgear WGT624 router to be really easy to set up and with the
WG511T PC card I connect at 108Mbps.
The manual explained the security settings quite well.
good luck
