I've lost speaker sound on IBM ThinkPad 600X and need help in diagnosing
my problem.

I do have earphone sound.
I was not using the earphone plug at time of failure or any time just
before.
I've used XP, ThinkPad, and ActiveX diagnoses which all indicate sound
is OK.

My theory is that the earphone jack is fed from one source in the
circuitry while the speakers are fed from a different source and the
speaker tap comes after the earphone tap with hardware and/or software
in between. Can anybody confirm this and advise me as to how to
diagnose the "in between"?

Often earphones and speakers are fed from the same source. By
default it feeds the speakers only, until you insert the earphone
jack plug which then switches from speakers to earphones.

i.e. there's nothing between other than wires and the earphone jack
socket.
