Epson EPL5500 faint print

I have one of these laser printers which has been excellent for many years.
I've now changed my O/S to XP and the printer prints faintly. I changed the
darkness as much as possible but it's still too faint for comfort. I've
discussed it with Epson who have recommended an old HP driver, which helps
but it's still not good.

Does anyone have any ideas as to what I can do about it? I don't really want
to chuck it out - apart from anything else I've got a stock of consumables
for it. Never thought that the change of O/S would cause this problem
