DVD-R/RW becomes CD-ROM

I am trying to use my DVD recorder to do some backups, something I have done
successfully in the past. When I put a blank DVD-R in my drive the drive
indication changes (in Windows Explorer) to CD-ROM. If I do the same while in
Windows Backup or other program, it says invalid disk or drive letter. When I
go into Device Manager and look at the drive it says:
Device Type: DVD/CD-ROM drives
Manufacturer [Standard CD-ROM drives]

The driver file details show cdrom.sys, imapi.sys, PxHelp20.sys,
redbook.sys, and storprop.dll. There were also some other files from EasyCD
5.1 which I removed.
The drive is a Pioneer DVR-105 and is correctly listed as such in Device
Manager.
Any ideas? I think I need to get back to the original Windows XP drivers for
this drive, which may have been corrupted by EasyCD, but don't know how.

Follow Alex Nichol's instructions for the 'disappearing' optical drive at:

Once you've got it sorted, don't forget to reinstall your DVD burning
software, XP cannot burn to a DVD by itself.

Non of the suggestions have helped. I strongly suspect that the drivers
became corrupted somewhere along the way. How can I get the original XP
drivers off the Windows XP disc? If I simply uninstall the hardware and
reinstall it, it just loads the same corrupted drivers. Presently, in device
manager it is calling it the correct "Pioneer DVD-RW DVR-105" device, but
when I look at the properties and select the record tab it says CD-R instead
of DVD-R. When I put a DVD-R in the drive the drive letter designation in
Windows Explorer changes from DVD-RW(D to CD-Rom(D. Software that used to
work with it, such as Photoshop Elements, say there is no recordable drive.
However, it did work with Photodex's Proshow after it downloaded a new
Photodex internal driver, so I know the hardware works.
So, to make a long story short, does anyone know what the procedure is to go
back to the original drivers that come on the Windows XP disc (because they
DID work).
