S2462 won't post!!!

Help! I'm completely new to the whole dual processor game. I'm
experimenting with an S2462 (w/o SCSI) board with 1900 MP's. I'm
using an Enermax EG465P-VE FCA power supply which is basically a
three-way power supply with connectors for ATX12v, EPS12v and ATX-GES.
I'm using the ATX-GES power connectors. I'm also using 2 sticks of
Crucial DDR, ECC registered memory at 256K each. My problem is that
the board won't post. The fans all crank up (4 case fans, 2 power
supply fans, one HDD cooling fan and 2 cpu coolers). The power lights
come on for the CDROM, HDD, but that's it. Nothing else happens, no
beeps, no sounds, no video, nothing. The guy I bought the board and
processors from (a very reputable fellow here in town) says the board
worked fine when he removed it from the system it was orginally in. I
know it's not much to go on, but does anybody know a secret step I'm
missing? Thanks for any help you might be able to provide.

I own the S2462 myself and have been using it without issue since its
release. (Getting it to work right initially is a different story.) I've
been following this NG since then too, and can point you to some
possibilities:

1. Power supply: This motherboard is extremely finicky about power. I'm not
familiar with that Enermax PSU, but I had issues with my first PSU that
produced similar symptoms.

2. Memory: Again, this system is very picky. Be sure your memory is on the
Tyan approved list. Just for kicks, take both sticks out and try to boot.
Then just try one stick, then the other. Could be a bad stick of RAM.

3. I believe there was an issue with the CPU jumper settings. Check this
link for the manual addendum: ftp://ftp.tyan.com/manuals/a_s2462_100.pdf

Hope this helps,
Ken

This is only a guess mind you. But has the BIOS been updated? What
you're experiencing sounds like what happened to me just last week. I
update the BIOS on one of my machines. Something I had done many
times before without incident. After flashing the BIOS, I booted up
and nothing! No POST, no beeps. Nothing! Panic set in :). I sent
the BIOS chip out to have it flashed. It came back, I popped it back
in. Same thing: nothing at power up. Then I read that I had to:

- Unplug the PC
- Clear the CMOS buy shorting a pair of terminals (Some boards have
pins which you can merely put a jumper across and then remove. I had
to use a screw driver).

Sure enough after doing this, everything was back to normal. Though I
had to reset all my BIOS settings. But that was hardly a difficulty.

Hello,

I just bought one -- without scsi (ng?). I'm in the process of buying all the
stuff to build it. I'm kind of annoyed by the situation with the power supply.
I was hoping that this was a relic from the past -- hoping stable, clean power
was no longer an industry problem, but I see that this thread is recent.

Rather than simply going by Tyan's recommended power list, anyone know of a set
of specs one can go by, or should look for (or avoid)?

Which power supply are you using?

Regards,

Bryan

I'm using the PC Power & Cooling 510 A4, which can be found here:

http://www.pcpowercooling.com/products/power_supplies/maxperformance/turbocools/index_hp_atx-2.htm

PC Power & Cooling arguably makes the best PSU available, but you do pay for
the quality. This one is currently going for $199.

I had a very similar experience with my 2462 when first aquired. My eventual
problem turned out to be one bad processor.

Strip the puppy down to troubleshoot. One stick Memory, One processor and
vid card. Start and see if it will post. If now, swap out the processor's.
This will test the bad processor angle. If no joy perhaps the power supply.
As said, the 2462 is picky, picky, picky about stuff. Once its stable, its a
timex watch, but until then.....
