I am having some issues with some of my games in MAME32.
Games such as Dig Dug, Qix, Rally X, Burgertime, and PacMan fire up and
play fine.
A lot of the games however have very choppy gameplay and poor screen
rates. Tempest, Mappy, Paperboy, Pole Position are extremely bad.
On a somewhat related note Mappy USED to play fine and I had an older
version. Then one day Mappy started acting up. I though updating
would help but apparently it hasn't.
Any help you can provide would be greatly appreciated.

As MAME gets bigger, the performance goes down. Older versions of MAME
(.57 or so) will run most games on a 500 MHz processor. I have .95
installed now and it won't even run Don Den Lover Vol. 1 at full speed
on my Athlon XP 1700. Version .86 runs it just fine.
Remember, the purpose of MAME is accurate emulation/preservation of the
game code. Actually PLAYING the games is just a side effect of that effort.
I suggest you use the oldest version of MAME that will play the games
you want.

......and to easily find out the oldest version, take a look at the
second half of 'catver.ini', which can be found at http://www.catver.com/
