Choice of OS

OS is Windows XP Home SP 1 and 2.

I have two physical hard drives C and D. D drive has remnants of an earlier
XP installation and now, on booting, it gives me the choice of which
version. I have, from the C: drive, formatted D but it still asks me which
version on boot.

If there was DOS in XP I could delete all the files on D: there are a couple
of files remaining I can't delete.

XP runs fine on C: but this is just a nuisance. Any help would be
appreciated.

Go to Start > Run and type: MSCONFIG , and hit enter.
Click on the BOOT.INI tab and then click on "Check All Boot Paths"
to delete incorrect boot paths.

If the above does not work for you, then:

Right-click MY COMPUTER and select:

Properties > Advanced > Startup and Recovery Settings > Edit

CAREFULLY edit your boot.ini file to remove the SECOND entry.
Your boot.ini file should then look similar to this:

[boot loader]
timeout=30
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(1)partition(1)\WINDOWS
[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(1)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition" /fastdetect

This is caused, not by files and remnants left on the D drive, but the
content of a file called 'boot.ini'..

Go to this website, print it off for reference, and follow the instructions
carefully..

Thanks Carey and Mike, you were spot on. When I clicked "Check all boot
paths" it said one was not valid and suggested I deleted it. I did and it
works fine so thanks again.
