Hi, I run Windows XP SP2 (Which is completely up-to-date) and have a Toshiba
CD-RW and DVD-RW combi drive. I've used it store backups of my files and
recently everytime I try to record to any type of CD an error message appears
saying the disk is either full or unuseable and to try another disk - which I
have. I've also tried disks from different manufacturers and changed the
recording speed to minimum but the device still displays the error. When I
click on properties and hardware it says the device is working correctly, and
when I click check for driver updates it says that the drivers are
up-to-date. I usually use Windows to record to a CD but have also used Sonic
RecordNow which makes no difference. Also I cannot erase data from a RW disk
although Windows tells me it's erased and shows that there is nothing on the
disk when its window is opened. The data is still their if I re-insert the
disk. If anyone can help it would be much appreciated.

Hi;
Sure looks like the drive itself is kaput.

If I remember correctly the problem did happen after instaling SP2. Thank
you this helps me alot, and I'll think about uninstalling SP2 unless anyone
knows of another way to resolve the problem?

I am experiencing the same issue. NEC ND 1300A CD/DVD burner, Windows XP
Home, almost new. Use to burn CD-R and DVD-R's but it has been a while since
I burned one. Lately I have been trying to compile our vacation pictures into
a slide show. Purchased Proshow Gold and when it came time to burn it, I
noticed that I could not burn to DVD-R's. Bought some DVD+R's and it worked
fine. But trying to burn some pics to CD-R with Roxio 6 Basic CD/DVD Creator
and get a "power calibration error" and "track writer error". Found one
comment about cheap CD's, but I use Maxell, and bought some Fugi to make
sure. What was your final resolution? Was it SP2? Is there a new driver or
patch to be able to burn -R's again?

I just bought a new Sony CD-R / CD-RW burner 10 days ago. I could not write
and was getting the same power calibration error at the 8% mark during burn
tries. I took the drive back for an exchange. The new drive works fine,
without having done anything to the operating system.

Today at work I bounced the atapi.sys idea around our group, we support the
OS and desktop applications for a good size company. Found at least 3 other
burners that had gone dead since SP2. Haven't had a chance to try replacing
it with the SP1 version to test. You sure no one else has reported anything?

Switched out the atapi.sys ver 5.1.2600.2180 at work Friday with the
5.1.2600.1106 and was able to burn to DVD-R media. Tried the same at home and
it also fixed my problem. Microsoft needs to take a look at that file.
