NEC 1400 printing problems

My NEC 1400 laser printer is connected to my compaq presario. It has
2 problems. The first is that it will print exactly 5 pages and 8 1/2
lines and then it just stops. It does not complete the last line. It
only prints the top half of the letters. It cuts off no matter what
the source of the document, word, internet, whatever. I have run
through the help menu and nothing fixes it.
The second problem is that if I happen to hit print before I turn on
the printer I get pages and pages and pages, like 50 or more of one or
two character non-sense.

Does this make sense to someone out there in the IT world. As you can
probably guess by my layman's language, I'm not a tech. Thanks
