Lexmark's Earnings Rise (#2 in the printer market)

"Lexmark International Inc. reported sharply higher quarterly earnings
on strong sales of printers and ink cartridges, but its forecast
disappointed investors, sending its shares down 6%. Analysts said
the company's third-quarter outlook was not as aggessive as some
observers had hoped.

Moderate rise in Lexmark's inventories and concern about Hewliett-
Packard's soon-to-be announced new-product lineup also weighed
heavily on the stock, analysts said.

Lexington, Kentucky-based Lexmark, second in the printer market
after Hewlett-Packard, posted second-quarter net earnings of
US$136.6 million. Revenue rose 11% to US$1.25 billion from
$1.12 billion."

Comment: this is posted as news in passing. I personally don't care
for their line of printers as I find them terribly limiting. But
for a large portion of the printer buying market, a Lexmark is all
they need. Remember the Volkswagen beetle of the Sixties and
Seventies? We laughed at it too.

I had a Lexmark Z55. It didn't use up its ink any faster than my Epsons
or my Canon. In fact I had to add more contrast and brightness to my
photos in order to "squeeze" more ink out of it. Its major fault lay in
the fact that the Z55 cartridge was quite small. This would certainly
make it appear to be fuel "inefficient". But it really had no play on me
as I refilled the same two cartridges umpteen times over the two years,
much to the dismay of the folks at Lexmark. Sorry, Lexmark, but charging
up to $67 Canadian (with taxes) for a colour cartridge is plain robbery.
