What a monstrosity...

I still want one though, lol.

And notice that it breaks the 300W compliance for the PCIe 2.0 :p

Cheers!
June 8, 2012 6:14:12 PM

I would still probably rock the GTX 690.

Very good card and also would be VFM if it become cheaper than the 690 .
June 8, 2012 6:24:16 PM

So if this is not the 7990, what is?
June 8, 2012 6:24:38 PM

So freaking huge! It's even taller than a stock card... wow!

Could be because it's PCIe 3.0....
June 8, 2012 6:45:41 PM

How do I win this????
June 8, 2012 6:47:44 PM

I'm fairly sure it is not breaking the PCIe 300w compliance. See those 3 power connectors on the side? The extra power is not being drawn from the PCIe slot.
June 8, 2012 6:51:04 PM

I wonder if they will have the sams clock speeds as the "regular" 7970s? As previously - some older dual GPUs on a single PCB cards would have lower clocks due to higher heat output.

This looks like a great card for multi monitor setups. This is going to have to cost slightly less than $1000 as you can get dual 7970's for less than 1000.

Is it just me or does the gpu on the right look like it has a face on it? Photoshop? devilish coincidence?
June 8, 2012 7:02:57 PM

OMG Its massive! If it is going to retail for the same price of a GTX 690, and a 7970 is a bit slower than a GTX 680, could the 7970 x2 have two overclocked 7970s? Im just saying cause i see three 8-pin pcie connections.
June 8, 2012 7:04:53 PM

what i have heard there will be no 7990. feel free to thumb me down but after some thought it really makes sense. sorry guys :(
June 8, 2012 7:54:28 PM

This is all well and good, but where the hell is the 7990, is it ever coming out!
June 8, 2012 7:58:59 PM

It sure is a sexy and no doubt powerhouse of a card, but for $1,000..... I have a idea, how about Tom's give us all old members still around one! Just take out out of Marcus's paycheck.

It doesn't matter. The 690 availability borders on non-existence, not unlike the 680. AMD is readying their refreshes, which is much more important to the bottom line.

I think you'd be better suited to Alex Jones sites.....
June 8, 2012 8:27:16 PM

Given that there is no official reference design for a 7990 from AMD, and therefore no specialized drivers, I would worry about drivers working properly with this card. Would AMD drivers see this card as a pair of xfired 7970s, or is it a slightly different beast?
June 8, 2012 8:33:27 PM

Given the way that it's named, I think it's strongly implied that it would be recognized as a pair of xfired 7970s by the drivers... then again, we'll find out next month
June 8, 2012 9:10:10 PM

where were these with the 6xxx cards? Ive been hoping for 6950 x2 but nothing. Oh well next card is most likely gonna be Nvidia anyways
June 8, 2012 9:52:19 PM

@author of the article(i hope this doesnt get barried)
I got another source stating MSRP is gonna start at 1200$(link below), is your 1000$ speculative?

Heard of the 6990?
June 8, 2012 10:29:17 PM

I got 2x 690s and a 4.8ghz oced 3570k, im set for the next 6 months or so.
June 8, 2012 10:54:33 PM

When are we going to get the 7870 X2? I still remember the 6870 X2 that allowed triple 6870s (one standard, one X2) in CF, which ran in circles around the 590 and the 6990.

I think the PCIe slot itself only provides 75W. Then, a 6-pin connector can provide an extra 75W and a 8-pin can provide 150W.
June 8, 2012 11:57:56 PM

I really want to see the performance numbers between this and the 690. Nividia had many months to develop kelper to be better than tahiti and it BARELY beats tahiti. I honestly think the 3rd party mfg's are just making this X2 to appease to hardcore red team guys. In the AMD house I bet there is a 7990 brewing that will desimate all that nvidia loves. just a guess.

IMO nvidia can sell more 690 if they want to but personally i think nvidia turns more 690 into tesla K10 since the profit are bigger lol.

btw i know many were hoping this thing will be cheaper than 690 but i heard the rumors that this beast are going to cost around 1200. based on that price this card will be on the same league as asus mars series
June 9, 2012 4:07:14 AM

Man i wish someone sell me one of this that did fell of the truck for 30 $ to please some weird chemical addiction! JUNKIES where are you?
June 9, 2012 4:15:38 AM

I wonder if it'll play nice xfire with my single 7970...

Crossfire works on two or more cards with very similar or identical performance to work....so no I don't think so.

I recall someone manage to use 6870x2 + a 6870 in cross fire without prob. So if 7970X2 is treated as 7970 in crossfire pairing it with another 7970 for triple crossfire shouldnt be a prob. Micro-shuttering on 3 cards are better than 2.

It needs 4 minidisplay ports. Then I would buy it.
June 9, 2012 1:57:23 PM

Bet this would also make a decent backup for the heating system of a small Condo or House :-)
June 9, 2012 4:18:01 PM

how do you cross fire this beast with the shroud of the lower card in the way?
not that you'd need to, but i see the cross fire connector and i can not help but think what a render farm would do with these.
i'm also a little dismayed at the triple 8 pin power connectors, not that it's unreasonable, but jesus are the lights going to dim when you fire up the beast using this card! i'd almost be afraid the hand of god would reach out and slap any one for trying to suck all the light out of the world (neighborhood) who gets a pair to run in cross fire.
June 9, 2012 6:14:43 PM

guess they got tired of waiting for the mythical 7990 so they made one of their own
