Just recently I began to have problems when I boot up, I get all kinds of
letters and artifacts scattered around the boot up screen. After that
though, when it finally gets to win xp pro everything appears to be fine,
with no apparent problem. I can run 3d mark 2001 and get 10,700's. The
reason for running this is, I thought it might be a video card problem and
it still may be ? But I upgraded drivers then tried old drivers again ,
also flashed the bios. Never had the problem before until recently. System
is water cooled and temps are ok. Any suggestions?
thanks chrisj

Chris: I have seen similar problems. Replacing the video card usually
solved them. Perhaps this occurs only when your video card is cold, and when
warmed up a little bit the symptoms disappear. This could be due to a
failing component on the video card or a cold solder joint on the card.

What I would do if you, is remove the video card, clean the contacts at
the base of the card (with a pencil eraser and then isopropyl (rubbing)
alcohol). With the card on a soft towel push against all the chips
lightly just in case they are creeping out of their solder joints. Check
the base of the card to see if any solder joints look bad or if there
might be some cracks. Then reseat the card well and try again.

Thanks for the reply Larry, I lean towards thinking it's a vid card problem
also, and your advice makes sense. I will check it out and let you know what
happens.
Thanks again

Being a VIA KT400 chipset and unable to lock PCI/AGP speed , if you are
overclocking, you may be pushing the FSB a bit too much.

I get the same problem with EPOX 8K3A which is KT333 based.

Try lowering the FSB back to normal for a while and see if it goes away
