staminasports,
Is this the type of cable your talking about?
'USB To Serial Adapter DB9m, G-uc232a' (http://tinyurl.com/dmhbd)

Notice the requirements, Windows(r) 98/2000 compatible.
Not for items that require IRQ or I/O address.

You didn't state who makes your gps device. I would check to see if
there is a driver/firmware update for the unit for XP.
It may be that the device is incompatable with XP.
Best,
Treeman

What do you mean by "xp won't even recognize the cable"?
Under XP my USB to Serial cable does not show as a USB device. No message
and no "safely remove hardware" icon appears.
When I plug it in, it shows up as a serial port in the control panel - and
works as it should.

Is it still working just fine on Windows ME? Is it compatible with XP?

when i try to instal it, xp can't find the corect driver. when i go into
hardware manager it is listed as "not configured properly". the cable is a
couple years old, maybe i just have to get a new one. it is an iconcepts
brand and i can't find much about them on the web.

Mine is also a no name but came with a CD.

Google "iconcepts usb drivers" without the quotes and you'll have about 9000
hits. The first one should have what you need.
