Cleaning HTC of an XP cpu - what cleaning fluid to use?

Hi all

I've got an old XP2000+ lying around which I actually pronounced dead some
time ago. To explain, I was attempting to put a tiny spot of thermal paste
on the CPU die - when I "sneezed & squeezed". The result was thermal gloop
all over the CPU. I tried to clean it off the best I could but the CPU was a
no go from them.

So I guess there's two questions I need to ask: -

1. Could I use white spirit/meths to clean the gunk off the CPU or do I need
a specialist cleaner?
2. How slim are the chances that after the gloop is removed that the CPU
will work as normal?

TIA

AMD recommends using alcohol. Look here on the AMD website; there are movies
detailing how to clean the CPU and heatsink.

It should work fine as long as no grease remains on the pins. Only breaking
the die, pins or overheating would do any permanent damage.

I don't know what kind of thermal paste you have but you can wash your CPU
in water (warm maybe) and then later dry it with hairdrier. It should work
normal. Just be sure CPU is completely dry when you put it in the computer.

If was standard thermal compound, you don,t need anything special. Hot
soap and water works fine with a soft bristol brush. That's also how I
claen the MB's. Submerge and soak for best results. Rinse wery good with
hot water. dry.

Unless you used some conductive paste, there shouldn't be any damage at
all.

Cheers for the input folks - i think I'll try and get hold of some alcohol I
just don't like the sound of sticking water on the CPU, just doesn't sound
*right*.

I used acetone on some Artic Silver 5. It cleaned up real fast and nice.
If you can't find it, it is just fingernail polish remover.
