Yep, all Athlon 64's are multiplier locked except for the quite expensive
FX series. Opterons are also locked I think.

It goes up with the system clock, not the multiplier. IIRC it where all
data comes to/from the CPU except memory, which has it's own bus. There's
block diagrams on AMD's website.

Would you buy the 64 3000 or the 3400 ?

Thanks.

Well, I'd go for the Athlon 64 3200, which is what I did. If I was buying
now, or soon, I'd probably wait for the 939 pin version to come out. The
dual memory channel should give a good performance boost even with a
smaller L2 cache.

I bought the 3000+. And I don't need half that speed 99% of the time.:)

I read somewhere that its only the higher multipliers that are locked. i.e.
if your chip is an 11x part, you can set 10.5x, 10x etc., but not 12x.

Don't know if that's true, but it would be neat if it is. After all its the
lower multipliers we are after :) And I guess it would make sense inasmuch
as AMD have plenty of incentive to block the higher multipliers (to stop
people selling fake chips) but it shouldn't really matter to them if the
lower multipliers are available.

Can anyone confirm this for sure?

Yes.. I think this is the case that you can turn the multiplier down on
every chip so it can be @ or below the default multi..

I would guess that part of this is probably a move into thermal management
(or so I hope).. It would be lovely to take ur chip and change a mutli of 11
down to 4 when you go to bed, all the generic services can still run and
your pc fans could go quiet ;) ..

No.. But I have heard it and if I find a link then i'll pass it back ;P

True. I just wasn't thinking of lowering it and I can't see any reason one
would want to. Also this depnds on the MB unless you know of a pin mod for
it.

The system clock is already 200MHz so there's not a lot of room to up the
clock speed unless you've got some real fast ram and a new board that
locks the PCI bus.

> Can anyone confirm this for sure?

Can't confirm. My board doesn't support bios multiplier changes. It won't
even let me go under 200MHz to slow the system down.

Well.. I would think lowering it would have it's uses..
Bit like taking a 2600+ 333 chip and wanting ddr400.. but finding the chip
wont run @ 11.5x200 .. would be lovely to shove it back down to 11..
I think that's probably where the poster was wanting to take us and I could
def see that being valid. Or if he wanted to make a passivly cooled a64
system then this could be important.
