Problem with Hard Drive Enclosure on USB

Upon my return from vacation I found my motherboard had blown so I purchased
a new computer. This one has SATA drives rather than the IDE like my earlier
one. I wanted to get some files off the old hard drives so purchased an
Adaptec USB 2 Hard Drive Enclosure. I installed my old C drive in the
enclosure and following the directions I connected it to one of the front
USB ports on the new computer. It was recognized via plug and play (no
drivers for the enclosure needed) and I was able to get some files off.
Knowing this would be a long process of going through everything, I was
prepared to do this over a few days. However the next day when I tried to
access the drive, it didn't show in Windows Explorer. I removed it from USB
plug and tried the USB port next to the one I had previously tried. It
recognized the drive and I was able to get more files. However the same
thing happened after I turned it off and rebooted the next day. I was
unable to get it to work in either one of the front ports. I then tried one
of the back ports, everything worked as before. Again, though, after turning
it off, I am unable to access it through any of the 3 ports I've previously
tried! What is going on? I still have stuff to get off it and I'm running
out of ports. I still have another hard drive to get files from and had
planned on keeping my 80GB drive in the enclosure and use it to transfer
stuff back and forth between my laptop and desktop. Is there a windows
setting I'm missing? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks. I'm
running WinXP Home, SP2 on a Dell Dimension 9100 with 1GB RAM.

Why not connect the old drive by the IDE cable on the new board, just because
it supports SATA it still has IDE connections.

That seemed to be more trouble thanit was worth since I have a CD-RW and a
DVD-RW using the one IDE controller on the MB. The enclosure seemed like a
good solution.

The probability is you have problems with the Universal Serial Bus
Controller driver(s). You should go to Device Manager/Universal Serial Bus
Controller and delete all entries, reboot and allow Windows to automatically
reload the drivers. Having said that I assume from your post you have a new
machine from Dell. To avoid any possibility of invalidating the warranty
you should call Dell support and get them to troubleshoot your problem.

I emailed their support and am waiting for their response. I thought maybe
it was something to do with a Windows setting but I'll wait to see what Dell
says. Yes, it is a new Dell so hopefully they'll come up with something. If
they can't figure it out, I'll try your suggestion. Thanks.
