Best HS/fan for an XP3000?

Am building a system using an A7N8X-X mobo, 512 mb Corsair XMS, Athlon XP
3000.
I am considering a Volcano 9 with the ducting mod, can get one for $19.00 on
eBay. Water cooling is out of the question, as it looks like it would cost
8-10 times as much. Will only overclock it to the limit of air cooling. I
want a really GOOD heatsink/fan, even if it costs a good deal more than
$19.00. The eBay ad claims Volcano 9 can be used up to an XP 3400.

I've seen taking the side off the case and ducting a big room fan against
the board/cpu/fan can drop cpu temperatures 5-10C. This was with the AMD
supplied retail heatsink/fan combo installed.

There's only one solution for you then:

- Thermalright SP-97 heatsink http://snipurl.com/6ps6
- Arctic Silver 5 thermal compound http://snipurl.com/6ps9
- 92mm fan

Depending on your noise tastes, you can choose a 92mm fan to your
discretion. Most fan manufacturers produce low-noise 92mm fans, but the CFM
is generally quite low. If you want something with excessive overclocking
power, then you may have to suffer the sound of a hairdryer.

you can build a water cooling kit and its not expensive at all :)

Yea! The SP97 is the heatsink to get. However, it is not specified what
thermal paste comes with it. Is it Arctic Silver 5? Also, I want a 92 mm
fan that will move as much air as the recommended Delta one. But is there a
similar fan that has a built- in control so that it is throttled according
to heat load, like the Volcano 9 (80 mm) fan? That is the really neat
feature about the Volcano 9! This would save wear and tear, and ease the
noise problem when not doing anything CPU-intensive. Or maybe there is an
external temp control accessory that can sense CPU temp and vary the fan
speed, even though the fan itself has no speed control? (See new post
related to this) BTW, the best price I could find for the SP97 heatsink is
$33, and that includes shipping.

The Smart and Silent fan that comes with the Volcano 9 can
be purchased
alone, but be warned... at full throttle it is loud!

it's rather loud period. I just took one out and put in a SLK900a(no
mounting holes in the board for the other) with a 92mm fan and now you can
hear yourself think.

True, it is quite loud even when turned down,
but until I get better fans for my case and PSU I can keep
the
it turned down below their noise level. Looks like my
simple
little case mod is going to grow a bit. ;-)

Nope, white stuff. Works for me. I wouldn't bother paying shipping
on ~1 degree C. Drilling a couple of holes in your case would do more
cooling.

I've got a high speed panaflo 92, but I dial it down to about 2300RPM.
It's around 57CFM at 2800 or 2900RPM.
