Hi you all!

I would be very grateful if someone here will help me with some suggestions
on bulding my new computer. Here's what I'm preparing to build:

case: AOpen QF 50C (Windowed)

motherboard: GA-7VM400AMF

Athlon XP 2500+ (AMD Processor
in a Box (PIB))

Kingston 512 MB DDR 184 Pins PC2700
- KVR333X64C25/512 = CL 2,5

Seagate Barracuda ST3160023AS
7200.7 160Gb 7200rpm 8Mb cache S-ATA (maybe adding one more seagate in raid
config).

NEC ND2510A White 8x DVD
Double Layer bulk 8.5GB

I can build this in Denmark for about 616 USD.

I'm mainly interested in good performance in multitasking like running Adobe
InDesign + Illustrator + internet explorer + Matlab at the same time (I
somehow realize that Pentium with HT would be better for this but I cannot
figure out a system at the same price tag - any suggestions greatly
appreciated).

Beeing stucked with amd barton 2500 because of the price tag I'm not so sure
wheater dual channel ram is more important than sata drives for system
performance (the motherboard I've choosed has sata but no dual channel ddr -
please make some suggestions in this regard also).

I would also choose aria case for this microATX motherboard but I'm not sure
about the thermal implications of such a pursuit (beside the price).

I'd also like to be able to make dv capture from a sony dv camera. Please
advise if the motherboard build in firewire is good enough for this or I
should buy some other specialized cards (whichone? -maybe you gurus could
suggest some newsgroups where I should ask?).

Yours gratefully,

Roger

Get some PC3200 memory... the price is about the same. You should then be
able to easily overclock the XP2500+ to XP3200+ simply by increasing the FSB
to 200MHz (400DDR).
SATA drives don't really give any performance increase, if price is the
issue you are probably better sticking to a conventional IDE drive because
they are still a bit cheaper.

Built in firewire should be every bit as good as an add on card.

Thank you for your answer.

Maybe you know something about dual channel memory? would this improve the
performance for an amd Barton 2500 processor (cause I've heard that this is
not the case). Anyhow there are some nForce 2 motherboards with dual channel
DDR support but without sata -would this be a better option?

Thanks,
Roger

Dual channel will give a small increase in performance, maybe as much as 5%
in benchmarks, but in real word use you would probably not notice it. To run
dual channel you would also need to buy 2 x 256MB memory modules rather than
1 x 512MB.
One thing that would make a big difference if you wanted to use the PC for
games would be a dedicated graphics card. Going for a board without onboard
video (based on Via KT600 or nforce 2) plus a add-on graphics card may be
worth thinking about. If you don't want to run games then the KM400 will no
doubt do the job.

Integrated graphics may reach their limit for sharpness at 1024. So you may
consider something like an ati 9200se if it doesn't appear totally sharp.

I'm not so interested in gaming but I would like to use the computer also
for dv capture from a sony dv camera and subsequently for burning DVD with
my family movies. Do you think that the build in firewire is enough or I
should get some specialized cards for this? Has the AMD barton 2500 setup
I've mentioned enough processing power for capture and later for Mpeg2
encoding so as not to loose quality on the DVD movies?

Thank you again for your time.

As I said earlier; if you buy PC3200 / DDR400 memory you will be able to
increase the processor speed to XP3200+, no problem....but the XP2500+ would
be enough for Mpeg2 decoding anyway, it's just that running at XP3200+ speed
will do it faster. Firewire is firewire, the onboard is as good as any add
on card....as long as your camera has DV output it will work fine.

looks fine apart from the NEC burner, either buy a decent make, or don't
bother imo
