Hi All,
Quick (and serious) question, is CompTIA A+ worth the time and money?

(not-so) Quick background: I have a friend (ex-colleague) who was made redundant a few months back, he's fast approaching the big five-'0' and has been involved in computer systems (both hardware and software), for well over 20 years; because of his age and a minor hearing disability he's finding it very difficult to find work, would getting some (current) pieces of paper help?

More about : comptia worth

Depends what he wants to do. I've just gone through a similar experience although I am quite a bit younger. I've managed to find a job just of the back of my experience and degree but have to say a couple of MCP quals would have helped. What employers really want is something recent so tell him to put the best spin on his last job.

I have to say though, I don't consider an A+ as worth the money.

Sorry to bump this, im looking to do CompTIA imminently. I thought i have researched all the options and singled out A+ as one of the better ones, and following up with Network+
I just dont like the idea of pigeon-holing myself with MS / Cisco and i want to work as an IT Field Tech....hence CompTIA.
No degree or relevant experience to speak of :/  One must start somewhere though and my CV is very strong regardless.

Any advice?

From what I have seen of it, CompTIA training and books are very expensive for what they provide; if you are seriously considering it, search a certain file share site for PDF version of the books, then you can have good a browse before you buy any books or training courses and make sure they are going to be worth the money.

wwwproprofs.com is holding me strong at the mo, great site.

Minimum ive seen is 900 quid for a supported course but i figure i can get away with a few months free self study and just pay for the tests. Should cost no more than £300.

I'm actually doing the compTIA A+ and N+ at the moment. Although I feel that I may have sold my soul to the devil. I cant go to college or uni or night school as Ive got a 10 month old boy and work in kitchens and desperatly am in need of a change of career. So finding time to go to courses is difficult But like all things in life "you only get out, what you put in". So I just get my head down and use my spare time to study. But using the text book alone I dont think is any good. Thats why I use many sites aswell to help me along the way! So if you have any other options explore them first!

Good on you for making the effort! I think the telling thing in your reply is that you READ other sources. This was something that pissed me off no end when I was at Uni, people only reading the required texts rather than seeing them as a starting point to their own learning.

Respect to you skootman, I hope you achieve your goals.
You are right, the textbooks are not quite enough. Its amazing discovering how much I didnt know about PC's, but its amazing how much you can learn in a small space of time with some hard work.
