Hi,
I need to buy some PC3200 RAM for my 400FSB motherboard.

I'm not rich enough to pay out the over-the-top prices for CL2 memory, but
some RAM on dabs.com is listed as CL3, and some as CL2.5.

Is the 2.5 going to be much better than 3? is it worth the extra £10-20 or
so over the CL3? Would it be possible to run this CL2.5 at CL2 if it's made
by a good company like Corsair?

Thanks,
Daniel

Are you looking for 512MB or 1GB? If you are looking for 512MB I'd
check out Crucial Ballistix PC3200 CL2

http://www.crucial.com/store/PartSpecs.asp?imodule=BL6464Z402

I would never go with CL3 for PC3200, and really wouldn't recommend
CL2.5... That's up to you though, it depends on what kind of
performance you are looking for.

Generally speaking the higher the fsb/memory the less effect that CL has on
overall performance. I would have thought that there would not be that much
difference, just a lower bandwidth, which unless you are going to fully
utilise the memory bandwidth, you will probably not notice. But it is the
same as buying any performance part for anything - you are paying a lot for
what is a relatively small percentile increase in performance.

that depends on how important getting maximum memory bandwidth is, or if you
intend to overclock the memory. You could in theory overclock PC3200 CL2.5
more than CL3.0, by dropping the CL2.5 to 3.0. As someone who overclocks, I
personally would think it was worth the difference, however what I would
suggest is shopping about on the web a bit and seeing if you can get some
CL2.5 (or maybe PC3500) cheaper.

Would it be possible to run this CL2.5 at CL2 if it's made

maybe if you are very lucky, but if it would run stable at those speeds
inside normal parameters, then the company may well have marketed it as
such, so I would consider it unlikely.
