I have hard drives that I rarely use an in order to prolong their life
I disconnect the 4 pin power connector.
Am I creating any problem by not disconnecting the 80 conductor
cable ?
Thanks

In the Power Options applet in Control Panel, configure the hard drives to
power down after X minutes, where X is however long you want. If you aren't
using them then they go idle and will power down. That is, they stop
spinning so they don't consume that power or generate the wear but the
circuitry remains alive (which obviously it must be so it knows when you
attempt to access the drive so it will spin it up for you). I set mine to
30 minutes.

You say "configure the hard drives to power down after X minutes"
I am using XP professional and it doesn't give me a choise to select
separate hard drives. It's all or nothing.

Right. You select all. When any individual drive has not been accessed for X
minutes, it will power down. The others will stay up until they also meet
the requirements you have set. When needed the drive will spin up
automatically.

It is a global setting applied to individual drives. It's like when trash
collection is the next day so you go scurrying around the house the night
before to remove trash. Yeah, it's trash night and the collectors will take
whatever you put out there in your one pile but you still get to pick and
choose which wastebaskets you will empty.
