I'm currently running an MSI k7n2-v mb, amd 2400+, 512MB 3200 DDR.
considering move to barton 2500+ and OCing a bit.
What are the benenfits, challanges, negatives to going mobile 2500+ over
desktop "straight" model.
Prices are close...

Easy:

Benefits: Unlocked, overclock higher, or run at lower voltage (therefore
cooler)
Challenges: None, but make sure your motherboard supports them
Negatives: None

I have the K7N2-Delta and replaced a 2400+ with a mobile 2400+. Got 2.2Ghz
on the desktop but 2.4Ghz on the mobile with the same voltage and temps.
But to be honest I don't know if I could really notice the change day to day
anyway. You might think about spending the $ on another 512MB of ram
instead.
