I recently purchased a combo deal of a asus a7400-mx mobo, and an athlon
xp 2000+ cpu. Solved my first problem with heat, it was pre-installed
using a thermal pad with the hsf. I only realized this when I got the
hsf off to unlock the palomino core via the l1 bridges.

Now my problem. It seems that the l1 bridges only have one side of the
contacts.... The l3 is there, also, there is no laser etching anywhere
on the cpu. Does anyone know if amd stopped leaving those l1 bridges to
discourage o/c?

I want to unlock it, ut I don't think I can...
TIA.

You sure it's a palomino core? Posting the OPN would answer this
(AX2000....). I've never heard (nor seen) any chip like you describe,
especially the lack of any laser cuts. If you could get a photo of the CPU I
would be most interested (either email me or post it on a site somewhere).

Doesn't sound like a Palomino core. What's part number, stepping, and date
code on the label? Or better yet, what's the CPUID numbers reported. I
would think a recently purchased CPU would be an internally locked core.

use this as reference.

I think someone at the store goofed. The combo package clearly stated an
asus a7v400-mx mobo, and an athlon xp 2000+, in brackets was palomino. I
ran cpu-z to see what it is (instead of opening the case again, taking
off the hsf again, blah blah, cpu-z reported it as a thoroughbred. To my
understanding these cores come unlocked correct? It's always the simple
things that are overlooked...

Now the problem is, how can I get the multipliers to be user defined on
this mb/cpu. The bios doesn't allow for it to be changed... hmmm...

Earlier Tbred cores were unlocked. Later ones are internally locked. Just
leave the FSB alone and change the multiplier to see if it's locked or
not. if the cpu speed cahnges with the multiplier changeds, then it's not
locked.

Before you do anything, you need to know which Tbred core you have, A or
B. This can be done with CPUID I'm sure. Don't know about CPU-z as I don't
use windows. 680 = A core. 681 = B core. If you have one of the free
Linux's that run from cd, boot it and from CL type this.

[wes@wes2 wes]$ cat /proc/cpuinfo
processor : 0
vendor_id : AuthenticAMD
cpu family : 15
model : 4
model name : AMD Athlon(tm) 64 Processor 3000+
stepping : 8

Family should be 6, model should be 8, and stepping will be either 0 or 1.
Thus 680 and 681 for A or b core.

You can use the pinmod to change multipliers. but it would be easier just
to raise the FSB to 166MHz. That would give you a 2600+ (2083MHz). And you
can do that regardless of a multiplier lock. You will need ram capable of
a 166MHz bus (PC2700) though if you run it in sync.

It is a thoroughred b core. I tried bumping up my fsb to 166, and
bumping the ram up to 166 and it works stable (once again the little
things). Now I need to get better cooling cuz my cpu is running at 59C
at idle!!
Thanks to all for the help!!
