My web searches have indicated that no one has been able to locate an
XP-compatible 1394 driver for the Sony PCG-F190 or any computer using
the Sony CXD1947 1394 chip.
The Win2000 device driver, Sony1394.sys (both 11/11/99 and 11/12/99) is
on the XP driver protection list and will not install. For good
reason. By changing the Sony1394.sys filename and editing the
corresponding inf file, I was able to install it. It caused XP to
totally crash -- to reboot I had to remove all power including the
battery -- holding the power switch for 4 seconds did not work.
So, it appears that if you want 1394 connectivity with XP on the
CXD1947 chip, you'll need to buy a PCMCIA card.
Also, if you are updating one of these older Sony laptops to XP, I
suggest that you use www.vaio-link.com (Europe), rather than
esupport.sony.com. The vaio-link site had an XP section for the
PCG-F190, whereas eSupport did not. The vaio-link site had the XP Alps
touchpad driver, whereas the Win2K driver would not install. Product
Code and Serial number are required and the numbers from my
purchased-in-the-USA PCG-F190 gained entry. The one advantage to the
esupport site is that installation instructions were provided --
sequence is important; I didn't notice these instructions on the
vaio-link site.
