I was thinking of getting an Athlon but my local dealer has only got
a 1700+. (I had wanted a 2200+.) Now I find that I can source a
Duron 1.8 for the same price as the Athlon 1700+.

My question is ... does anyone have a comparison of a Duron 1.8 with
an Athlon 1700+ ?

-----

ISTR that the Duron's number is the actual clock speed whereas the
Athlon 1700's core runs at 1.47 GHz, so that may make the Duron
attractive.

However, I think the Athlon has more on-chip cache and possibly wider
buses.

All this makes it hard to compare on spec alone.

----

Will be running this as a small office PC with Net browsing and some
video watching. Mobo has a Via 266 chipset with 768 MB memory.

The Athlon imho, but probably worth looking for a used 2200

I'd get the Duron, especially if it costs less, and the motherboard supports
it. It is an Athlon with less cache, and runs on a lower voltage.

Faster.. the 1.8 duron as it's a 1.8 ghz chip compared to the 1700+ at 1.466
ghz, however the athlon's greater L1 and L2 cache probably make up for that
so the 2 are about equal in performance.

Cori,
If the 1700+ is a JIUHB (B-core) like this one:
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.d [...] 6746280849
Then get it. Although this guy may be streching it a bit, the
description explains the overclocking abilities of the chip, and, as you
can see by the price they are still in demand. Even if you don't OC the
value will remain high due to it's OC abilities.
If it's an A-core 1700+ then probably the 1800= Duron would be the
better choice. I have both a 1700+ @1950mhz JIUHB running very cool (35c
at idle, 43c watching full-screen DVD's) and a locked 1600= Duron
running @ 2000MHz but when both chips are running stock the Duron
is faster at DVD rendering tasks, etc. The extra cache is only useful if
the program uses it.

You can find a comparison of a 1700+ and Duron 1600 here.

Yes.

Just more cache.

At default speeds, the duron 1600 is close to or beats the 1700+ XP in
benchmark testing, so the the Duron 1800 would certainly be a better
choice at default speeds. Since your board has a limited FSB, you can even
overclocked the duron more assuming both have locked multipliers. Now if
you had a newer board that supported a 200Mhz FSB, then a 1700+ XP would
be a better choice as long as it was a tbred B core. But for this setup
with only those two cpu's available, I'd get the Duron as much as I would
hate to.:-) BTW, I've got a Duron 1600 in my spare machine running at
12x175 (2100MHz) now. You can probably get 145MHz FSB for 13.5x145 for
close to 2000Mhz out of the Duron 1800 in your board.

The duron should overclock slightly better than the 1700, and after OCing it
will outpeform the 1700.
