Early HardHouse rose up with the Acid Techno craze. DropBeat; Acid Jazz; etc..

I remember those early days in my twenties with much fondness.

Now you're on track.. I once was a figure of those days.. ahh how I liked them so much better than these days. Only cool people were on there..the sense of community. Now all the freaks come out.
Used to sit in chats and have good conversations with people.. telnet to other BBS's across the country and hear about things going on over there.

I remember back in 91.. I telneted into a BBS in Kuwait. The only person who could type English was 16 years old. She wanted to come to America and get away from Iraq.
She told me that all the men on her street that were home were taken to the street and beheaded. Her dad wasn't around at the time. They stayed locked in their house.. she told me things that she had seen over there that the Iraqi military was doing to them.. that was right before the US attacked.

Anyhow..

iCE - Insane Creators Enterprise, Inc.
ACiD = Ansi Creators in Demand
cDc = Cult of the Dead Cow (dead beef) - later released Back Orifice as a hacker ulitily.

I used to play in those areas back when it was coming out.. used to have a good friend.. Osiris. He was around 10 years older than I was yet he talked to me about all the things he was doing. Sent a buffer file of quite of few pages of NASA's BBS that he had gotten a little extra access to. Nothing of importance was shown except city rankings for a nuclear attack from Russia.. that was way back though.. probably around 89-90 is my guess.

Unfortunately for you I was one of those early phreaks You and the other real techie's woud have wondered how the hell this idiot was able to operate a computer let alone tie his shoes. ( for all the youngsters early dos was like driving with manual brakes , tranny & steering with a heavy spring clutch)

Reply to AilingBlackLab

Oh yes & I pronounced dos as das not daws that allways pissed people off

Reply to AilingBlackLab

I used Telix.. I loved that program.

atdp 1,phonenumber

paging people, upload to download ratios..

My brothers both were heavily into ANSI drawings.. they created some really cool looking stuff that got onto some big boards.

I was like a sidekick zombie for cDc in some areas. When computers were so expensive and the group needed things done, I'd log in and follow their commands to overrun boards with them.. :) I'd type in select commands.. or when there would be a lapse, I'd pull out the \go remote or things like that.. get admin access, hand it off to them, then I'd bail out within 10 minutes (that's how long it used to take to trace phone numbers).

Then when boards started charging for credits.. find access, grant yourself credits, bail out.. eventually they caught onto that one..

Made $540 cash off someone donating me $10 to help them out.. can't complain. :)

atdt... lost host connection...atdt...

Reply to AilingBlackLab

ahh yes... and overnight 2mb d-loads

Reply to AilingBlackLab

atdp, atdt.. moving up from pulse to tone on me eh? haha

2mb downloads? you're crazy... that'd fill the hard drive.. you're talking 400k downloaded games and stuff.

That's when I saw my first glimpse of the Anarchist's Cookbook and all the UFO alien documents out there.. I was really surprised how fast UFO's overwhelmed the BBS market.. everything was UFO this, UFO that.. more than anything else.

I remember the talk of the internet.. "the internet is the way to go.. everyone will be switching to it." And then it came.. and fairly fast.. within 2-3 years, BBS's were gone.. only a handful were left.. and thus.. very exist to this day.

Renegade, os/2, and a few others..

I remember the days when the lowest common denominator on the 'net was something a bit higher than the paraplegic rat's puss that it is today.

We should make it more difficult to access the Internet - have a Smartnet corner for people who don't lack basic communicative skills.

In fact, if I were to ever make/run a forum, I'd make passing an IQ test/essay mandatory before joining.

That would take all the fun out of it! Imagine all the trolls you'd be missing. ;-)

Ever time I joined an 3|337 board I had to pass a 50 question exam on hacker knowledge, I had to get at least 12 members to sponsor me, and THEN they group would vote to allow or not allow depending on what kind of skills you brought to the table.

That's how you should do it.

Actually, it should have been "No and no." Sorry 'bout that.
