Hi
I have a media server running quite happily with a Duron 1800. Is it worth
swapping this out for an Athlon XP 2000+ pulled from another machine?
TIA

Maybe not. Durons are rated according to their raw clock speed. The
AthlonXP chips are rated with a Performance Rating. That Duron is
running at 1800MHz. The Athlon XP2000+ is running at something like
1666MHz but with a larger cache size and faster FSB. The difference
would be minimal, and might even favor the Duron slightly.

That will depend on the application.
The Duron runs faster 1800 vs 1666MHz.
But the Duron has only 64kB L2 cache vs 256, so apps that favour cachesize
will run faster on the XP.

If the Athlon XP is old (Palomino), it will use more power, so the Duron
will be more efficient.

In my opinion, if it runs OK now, I wouldn't bother.

Thanks for the replies.

I did swap the processors over, and subjectively, the machine seems to run
faster.
Normally it sits there 24/7 recording DTTV programmes to disc, and dishing
those out via wired network to (Hauppauge Media MVP) clients. It does this
the same as before, but when sat at that machine viewing and organising the
captured video files, it seems more responsive.

Cheers

Not really. The XP2000+ has a speed of 1666MHz whereas your Duron is
1800MHz. While the XP2000 has a 256MB L2 and the Duron has 64 L2, the extra
speed of the Duron makes up for the smaller L2 when decoding AVIs and other
video. When compressing video the 2000 will beat the Duron because of the
larger L2 even though it is clocked slower (but not by much).

If the two CPUs are about the same age then they will overclock about the
same. The 2000 with its larger cache will perform better than the Duron,
clock for clock, because of the larger L2.

Whatever you do, if you are running WindozeXP then consider getting a bit of
RAM. 512MB is sweet but 1024MB is much better. Make sure you have plenty
of RAM before worrying about the CPU speed. Your Duron will be more than
enough for a media server if you have enough RAM, especially if it is
decoding most of the time.
