What do you think is the best game music ever made?

I think my favorite is Paper By from 1984. Man was that impressive back then.

Nah, I can't get enough of the hi-score table music from Terra Cresta.
On a none-arcade note (no pun intended) the high score music AND the
pre-game music from the C64 game Monty On The Run is absolutely
fantastic.

Cheers,

In a parallel universe, Anti-Andreas Kohlbach said exactly the opposite

I would have to say that Ghosts'n Goblins has some pretty memorable and
catchy music, and great sound to boot so that could be considered my
favorite.

Then again, the music and sound on Twin Cobra kick definite ass, so that
coud also be a favorite.

And of course, the music in R-Type is also great, and even though I'd
prefer a lower-pitched sound for the ship's gun, I've played so much of
it that I've grown used to it, so that's another favorite for sure.

And how could I not mention Pac Man and Space Invader? Both of those were
such an integral part of the soundscape of most if not all arcades at
some time that no thread about best game music ever should be without
mention of them.

And I guess the same could be said for Bubble Bobble, which had good
music and sounds, and music that would stay in your head for hours after
you'd played the game. But that could be just me. Me and my analyst are
trying to figure that one out.

Game start tune from Galaxian, and all sound FX from same game. Oh to
be nine again. Also Pac Land tune and Wonderboy (used to make 10p last
over an hour, and still couldn't get bored of the tune repetitive though
it is)

You mean 1251?

I guess some Soundblaster cards have this chip, or at least perfectly
emulate it.

Okay okay.

Linux MAME seems not to support it, at least I cannot find a hint in the
help files. So I wasn't sure with the Yamaha chip.

[Thinking...]

Ah, it confused me with the by Microsoft invented charset "window-1252".

Actually, I always wondered if it was somehow possible to mute the in-game
music (while keeping the sound effects), and then I'd play whatever modern
remixes of Peter Gunn I could find in WinAmp, e.g. Art of Noise etc.

This is an off-topic reply, and it's not "best ever" per se, but I always
have fond memories of playing Lords of Thunder for TurboDuo console. ;-)
Apparently the music was re-done better for the SegaCD version, but I never
got that one...

There exist "drivers" which capture all sound from the sound card and
direct into a file.

Actually I have no sound at all. No sound card.

But AFAIK on some MAME platforms you can tell it to use the OPL chip to
emulate a YM3812 (not 1251 ;-) chip.

,----
| -ym3812opl/-noym3812opl (default: -noym3812opl) Uses the SoundBlaster OPL
| chip for music emulation of the YM3812 chip. This is
| faster, and is reasonably accurate, since the chips are
| 100% compatible. There is no control on the volume,
| however, and you need a real OPL chip for it to work (If
| you are using an SB-compatible card that emulates the OPL
| in software, the built-in digital emulation will probably
| sound better).
`----

Not on Linux as it seems.

Nope never in the arcade although it was released for just about every
other platform. I used to play it on the Megadrive. Theres a pretty good
version for the SNES too. Terrific game and theres this vertical level
about halfway through with music thats like a twisted version of an Irish
folk tune - awesome stuff. In retrospect it might just be the best game I
ever played on the Megadrive/Genesis although I used to play a lot of Road
Rash too.

I'd have to say my all-time favorite music is from Mappy. It was the
*reason* I played the game so much, although it is definitely one of
my favorite games as well. The Bonus Round music had my toe tapping for
hours.

Another older game that had great music IMO was Frogger.

I always liked the music from the original Sonic the Hedgehog - especially
in the bonus rooms.

favourites. I even programmed them as ring tones on my first cell
