With my IPAQ 3765, plugging it into the compaq dual-slot expansion pack
enabled it to use the 2000 mah battery in the pack. My 3870 seems to ignore
the battery in the same expansion pack. Is there a setting I've missed to
enable the 3870 to use or be charged from the expansion pack or do the later
models just not able to use that battery??

You didn't mention which expansion pack you have. But oh well, they aren't
too many too choose from.
To my knowledge, the compact flash expansion pack does not charge your
iPaq before it really needs it, i.e. close to emtpy charge.
The PC card/PCMCIA expansion pack on the other hand, uses the power from
the integrated battery to power the PC cards inserted thus saving power.

I have a 3870 with the expansion pack and it seems to work for me. Out of
interest do you have a wireless card that works in this dual slot unit?

Turns out that the dual-slot expansion pack is not supposed to provide power
to a 3870. An "expansion pack plus" is supposed to do this. I have one on
order and we'll see if HP is right.
I haven't tried a wireless card in it yet.
