Hi Guys

Today i bought a new Duron 1800 chip, my local shop managed to get there
hands on some.

Anyway it works as i tried it when i removed a Sempron 2500 from a MSI mobo

I bought it to replace the Duron 700 on this machine, put it in and got
nothing, no bootup, no beeps no nothing, and i did set it to 133 on the
mobo, now put the 700 back in(at 100)

I checked online and it seems this jetway 867as states upto Duron 1400 but
im wondering if theres anyway i can get it to work. maybe underclock it?

I dont want to look a fool and take it back. There are no more bios flashes
i can do, i have the latest i did a couple of years back, the mobo is about
5 years old.

Any suggestions on how to get it to work?
thanks

The 700 has a default FSB of 100MHz. The 1800 has a default FSB of 133MHz.
Try clearing cmos and then rebooting. If that doesn't work, try putting
the old cpu back in and then set manual settings to 100MHz FSB and see if
it boots up as a 1350MHz Duron. There's no reason it won't work in your
baord assuming the ram is capable of 133MHz (or you can manually set it to
100MHz). The Duron 1800 uses the Tbred B core, CPUID 681.

Thanks. After i posted here, i came accross the AMD forum, i posted the same
message and sure enough got the same reply i just noticed you put.

I tried that, wouldnt boot with the mobo set at 100mhz, as soon as i put
back in my 700 it boots fine.

I then put that 1800 into the MSI mobo (cos i think the sempron 2500 is
faulty, acc to many people with the erros i get trying to install XP) and it
work fine in that mobo. I thought if i bought the 1800 to see if that
really was the fault, i could then upgrade my 700 machine which i never did
due to lack of cash.

Oh my ram is ddr, old so either 1600 or 2100.

many thanks

Try the 2500+ in the Jetway board and see if it boots. If not, I'd say
either the board has a problem or the ram does.

> Oh my ram is ddr, old so either 1600 or 2100.

PC2100 should be fine at 133MHz. PC1600 is only rated for 100MHz.

I had an 867 once, I've been thinking hard about your problem. I
successfully ran Athlon 1200 and 2100+ chips on there without issues.
When you say "doesn't work", do you mean that the PC will not boot at
all, or what?

It doesnt boot. the power led comes on, no flashes on keyboard and no beeps.
as soon as i put back in the 700 its normal. I know the cpu is ok as its now
sat in the msi board......
got me stumped

There were a couple of older boards that wouldn't run the new tbred cores
until you removed a cap from them. Don't recall the specifics as it didn't
effect me. This could be the problem. It might also be a weak PSU problem
or something else. Sorry, I tried to read the manual, but it was mostly
blank after I dl'd it. Try a search for 867as tbred or something similar.
You might find the answer.

Results 1 - 7 of about 18 for 867as tbred

What's strange is that Jetway shows the board supporting tbred cpus,
specifically the 2200+, which is what the Duron 1800+ is minus the extra
cache. So it should work.

I went from a Duron 700 to a Duron 1800 recently. Only change I made
was to a jumper on my mobo to go from 100 to 133 MHz.

Is that a chance that the PSU in your Duron machine is being asked to
deliver more current on one of its voltage rails with the Duron 1800
than it can manage?

All this looks clean for a Duron 1800:

Yes i have the AS-H variant, as it had that magic install thing, or
something that never worked right when made so the last bios flash removed
it. i forget exactly what it was.

Maybe it is the psu. Its the orig 350 unit, its only running a hd, 64mb
geforce 2 but i guess it does dep on the rails. i cant afford to buy a new
psu at the moment, be a while yet so i was hoping it wasnt that. i dont have
another psu on hand.

I may try and take out the psu from the other MSI machine where the duron is
sat now running quite happily at 166mhz.

on a slightly diff subect.

Im a AMD fan although im not up on the latest stuff as i can never afford to
upgrade etc. But the Sempron 2500 for the MSI board.......i was told a
3000XP would fit straight in and would be the best upgrade cost wise. I
didnt know at the time that the Sempron was the budget version, eq of the
old Duron. i was told the 3000XP was better than a Operton.

I had seen that new game Battlefield2 and i fancied playing that some time
in the future (again gfx cards are something else i know ah heck all about,
the numbers confuse me)

That machine has a Geforce 5700LE

I need a new system in about 6 months. so prices will have fallen a great
deal then but if i was to upgrade that Sempron 2500 whats a good one to get?
i few quid here or there is fine, its when there is a sudden jump say £30 to
the next cpu up its a cut off point

The sempron isn't a Duron. It's well, see Sempron in link in sig. Whether
the 3000+ XP is your best choice depends. It's as good as any I guess, but
it comes nowhere near the performance level of the Opteron or Ahlon 64.

I've never played any of the newer games but the Athlon 64 is the king
when it comes to playing them.

Yes i meant the Sempron was a cheap budget chip as like the Duron was.

way outa my price range at the mo. maybe in the near future but as its taken
me this long just to update the Duron700(or trying too) im sure we will be
upto Athlon 128's or even 256's.......

Thanks, i think you have hit the nail on the head......

I know the 1800 works fine, as its sat in the other machine now.

Guess i will have to see another NG and try to swop it.

Which is the best bet, and quite easy to come accross second hand in the
ones you have mentioned that will work? Im not up on all the diff names etc.

My D750 ( spitfire ) worked fine in many *multiplier settings ( e.g.
133x6, 1.5v ), but my D1.6 ( applebred ) requires zero jumpers on
my Jetway V266B 's *. Try remove all * jumpers.

Well ok i couldnt get it working, but a guy is selling me a XP2000 Palamino
core. What can i up it too without much effort?

Just wonderd how good this is, in real terms, ok my gfx card is still a naff
gerfoce 2 mx years old, but i may pop in something better if i come accross
on the samge x4agp, im sure that 8x newer cards use more voltage.

ta!
