Hi all!

A friend recently asked me which motherboard is great for the Athlon 64 (San
Diego) 939 CPU. As I don't own a 64 bit system I'm wondering if any of you could
give me some advice. Many thanks!!!

It really depends on what your friend is going to be doing with the
machine. I finally wound up with the EPOX mentioned in this review and
have been happy with it using a 3500+ (Venice core) AMD 64.

In any case, the review covers a wide range of MBs and you may find
something you like there.

Thanks for your reply! :D

I also use Tom's Hardware Guide for vga charts - unfortunately can't find any
info on today's motherboards. I get the impression that there are thousands (not
hundreds) to choose from :(

There are many considerations, including:

1: AGP or PCIE graphics.
2: What peripherals do you wish to use - how many usb ports do you
need, and do you need firewire.
3: Chipset preference - do you want to use nvidia, via, or someone else.
4: Form Factor.

I chose the Abit AV8 due to wanting to use a 6600GT AGP graphics card I
already had. Running XP x64 and very happy with it.

You will be happy with most brands of modern motherboard as long as you
choose one with the features you want.

Regards,

Tom

Thank you for your kind reply! :D

Which brands do you recommend? And what are today's processor speed limits?
Thanks!

Expect to reach around 2.7Ghz when overclocking on air.
I hear alot of good things about the DFI boards,i myself have a msi k8n neo4
and it overclocks just fine.
I find little difference between the nforce4 boards,so choose one you like
for name and reviews.
