When I press tab and I get the onscreen display, the arrow sometimes goes up
and down, left or right freely. That depends on the gamepad, because if I
dectivate it, that doesn't happen. This is a bug since older versions of
mame, I remember. Is it only a probem of mine?

In a parallel universe, Anti-Marco said exactly the opposite of:

I'll say that it sounds a lot like a miscalibrated pad. That means that
when you're not touching it, MAME thinks that you're going up or down. You
need to recalibrate your pad.

Sune will come along and explain this a lot better than I. :-)

since the dawn of pc there has been problems with centering jitter on
the 15 pin joystick interface

choosin a setting under windows that calls it a gamepad instead of a
joystick seems to help a little with the jitter

and under the settings for the analog joystick deadzone can be set up
to near 90 with a pad and still have it work

the 15 pin gameport is a dinosaur it will soon be extinct even if it is
my favorite user friendly inteface its so simple with its resistors and
switches but the price you pay in the cpu time for postion polling is a
bit annoying
