What is the best, the Pentium 3ghz or an Athlon 64 3000+ Processor.

Any advice would be appreciated.

It depends on what you want to do.

For games and general desktop applications the A64 would be better.
For video editing and graphics work the P4 is best.

Another consideration to make is if you are going to buy windows XP 64bit
edition later this year to get the most out of th A64

There are no 64 bit applications available yet,so you will still be using 32
bit,and in some cases they will be runnig slower than the 32 bit. I have been
looking at getting a 64 bit CPU and MB but decided to wait a little longer when
the 939 processors become available, they will be dual channel non ECC or
registered ram and also waitng for the Nforce 3 -250 chipset
motherboards, mainly the Gigabyte brand, due out the end of next month. For
what it's worth you can get XP 64 bit beta system for free fro Microsoft.

And you can download the new test2 version of the 64 bit fedora (Redhat)
Linux.

First, choose the programs you want to run.
Then choose an operating system that is compatible with those programs.
Then choose a CPU that will do the best job with those programs.

THEN consider how long that platform will be around (how long will it be
upgradeable), the performance/cost balance of the COMPLETE system (if
you're going to spend $2000 US for the complete system, including
peripherals, then a $100 US difference in CPU cost is only 5% - the
operating system is likely to cost more than the CPU anyway, especially a 64
bit operating system), whether or not you are going to overclock, and what
platform (CPU and operating system) are familiar with.

?
That's just plain wrong.
There is no machine instruction that is slowed down by having the extra 32
bits.

Unfortunately your "just plain wrong" turns out not to be true. The main
reason for 64-bit is to allow a larger directly addressable address space,
and for that, longer instructions are necessary, which means more access
time for fetching. Besides, the post by 'courseyauto' did not even say that
64-bit instructions were slower, he said 32-bit instructions might run more
slowly on a 64-bit CPU than on a 32-bit CPU. This seems to be especially
true for the Intel Itanium because the Itanium is a break from the x86
legacy, while the Athlon64 is not.
