Cannot log into my Router

I am new to the wireless equipment and am struggling with logging into my
router(Netgear WGT624) in a Dell Dimension Desktop running XP. I am stuck
when I try to ping the router thru Internet Explorer (I get a message stating
'401 Unauthorized
Access to this resource is denied; your client has not supplied the correct
authentication.') I can ping the router through DOS, though. Is this a
firewall issue?

The solution is probably simple, but any help would be greatly appreciated.

Possibly. You can determine that very easily by disabling
your firewall and retrying your IE operation.

If you can access your router with the firewall disabled,
you probably need to add some IP addresses to the trusted
address list, if you are using NIS.

First, in DOS (Start / Run / cmd), execute `ipconfig /all`.
Second, in NIS, click Personal Firewall / Configure /
Networking / Trusted. Add any IP addresses that you see
in the ipconfig output. You should not need to add
192.168.* addresses, however.

I encountered similar problems, though not with accessing
my router. I had to add the DNS server addresses and
the default gateway address to the NIS trusted address
list.

Note: In IE, I also selected "Do not search from Address
bar" in Tools / Internet Options / Advanced.

Plug a copper cable into it and try again .

It's interesting that you have DOS on an XP machine..... are you sure you
don't mean the command line interface?

I've never heard of *ping* using IE. Are you sure that's what you mean?
