I am getting a new computer, (Not my choice or money) but can a DELL
dimension 4600 with a P4-2.8 be clocked up?
Does the DeLL bios allow for any tweaking?

I am very familiar with AMD and all kinds of OC with it, but not with P4's
and on a Factory system.

Any chance of a O.C. on a DeLL?

Not that I've seen ... I work on a lot of Dells (everything from old G1's
to GX270's), and pretty much the only setting you can change is between
"normal" and "compatability" modes.

The BIOS on a Dell is dumbed down to such an extent that almost everything
you take for granted with a normal BIOS is not user adjustable. You can add
or remove drives, set the date, etc. I think the most adventurous thing you
can do on a Dell is set the the AGP aperature size. No overclocking options,
period.

I once updated the BIOS on a Tiny computer (a few years ago). I found out
what mobo it was and downloaded the latest BIOS. It gave me a lot more
options than the one Tiny shipped.

Good luck on that trick with a Dell......i have never heard of anyone
anywhere being able to flash a different BIOS into a Dell....and every BIOS
Dell makes is crippled, no exceptions.

Well, I was younger and moe rash then. I don't think I'd try the same trick
now!

That trick may have worked with Tiny PC's, but it's not likely to help with
a Dell.

Dell usually use motherboards manufactured by Intel, and they simply don't
have any overclocking capability built into them. The OP would likely find
that the "Intel" BIOS offered no more functionality than the one he could
download from the system builder's website.

In fairness, I should clarify that none of the additional options given in
the flashed BIOS on the Tiny were relevant to overclocking anyway. As I said
in another post, it's not a trick I would try nowadays as the upside of any
benefit pales into insignificance against the potential downside. I just
thought it might help someone to know that it *can* be done.
